How many T 80 tanks does Russia have?
The Russian Army had 3,044 T-80s and variants in active service and 1,456 in reserve as of 2008. There are at least 460 T-80UD in service with 2nd Guards Tamanskaya Motor Rifle Division and 4th Guards Kantemirowsk Motor Rifle Division.

Russian tank losses
According to the latest data, Ukraine currently has around 1,400 active tanks compared to Russia's 1,300.
Model | Origin | Number |
---|---|---|
T-80 | Soviet Union Russia Ukraine | ~130 156+ |
T-84 | Ukraine | 5 |
T-90 | Russia | 12 (T-90A) 2 (T-90M) 1 (T-90S) |
PT-91 Twardy | Poland | >60 |
The Russians have lost potentially two-thirds of the T-72s that are in active service or in recoverable storage. So it makes a lot more sense why the Kremlin is pulling out of storage T-62 tanks that are even older than any T-72 is, as well as T-80Bs that are roughly contemporaneous with early T-72s.
At the beginning of 2022 the Ukrainian Army fielded approximately 100 T-72s, which served in a supporting role alongside over 700 T-64s. Approximately 800 more T-72s were in storage in the country.
The T-80 is a faster, more heavily armored tank than the T-72. The T-80 is powered by a gasoline turbine engine that gives the tank a ground speed in excess of 40 miles per hour. The tank is equipped with the Kobra missile system and can fire an antitank missile through its 125mm smoothbore gun.
Two or three years. That's how long the Russian army might have before it runs out of tanks, according to one estimate. And that's why it's not inconceivable that, in the near future, Moscow might do what Kyiv has done—and ask its foreign allies for their tanks.
Janovsky said that a number of factors were behind the losses, including Russia's "reckless initial invasion plan," effective Ukrainian use of anti-tank weapons, and Ukrainian use of minefields and artillery.
24. LONDON — Russia has lost 86 fixed-wing aircraft and 90 helicopters during the last 16 months of combat in Ukraine, but its national air force still poses a major threat, the head of the Royal Air Force said July 13.
How good is the T-80 tank?
USSR's Fastest Tank
Although its turbine engine made the T-80 the first tank capable of exceeding 70 kilometers per hour, was lightweight and could warm up quickly, even in the dead of winter, it was expensive, consumed fuel at a disturbing rate and was far more vulnerable to dirt and dust than the diesels.
The T-90 tank is thought to have been captured last September by Ukraine's 92nd Separate Mechanised Brigade, after being used in fighting in the Kharkiv region of north west Ukraine. The combat vehicle was left on a low loader in the parking lot of a restaurant in the state of Louisiana.
How many T-90 tanks does Russia possess? Since 1992, around 1,000 T-90s with various variants have been manufactured. In 2022, Russia owned approximately 350 T-90As, up to 100 T-90Ms, and an additional 200 T-90s in storage.
Ukraine has just five or six T-84 Oplot tanks based on the Soviet-era T-80 tanks, which have seen extensive operations in the ongoing war. Just six T-84 tanks would be enough only for one platoon, which is why this tank has rarely been spotted on the battlefield.
Russia's T-62 Tanks
The Russian military has already deployed a modernized variant of the T-62 tank, originally introduced during the initial phases of the Cold War. The T-62 tanks were introduced to the Soviet Union's military in 1961.
Poland – 130 T-72A/T-72M1/M1R in active service as of 2022. 2008 – 586 2006, 2007 – 597, 2005 – 644, 2004 – 649 and 135 T-72M1Z (T-72M1 upgraded to PT-91 standard). Also 232 PT-91 in service. More than 260 T-72s have been donated to Ukraine in 2022.
President Joe Biden announced today that the United States will provide Ukraine with 31 M1 Abrams tanks. That is the required number to equip an entire Ukraine tank battalion.
The PT-91 Twardy also features several upgrades over the T-72, including improved composite armour and explosive reactive armour (ERA), a modern fire control system with thermal imaging sights, a laser rangefinder, and a computerized fire control system.
However, the T-72's armor and fire control systems were less advanced compared to the M1A1 Abrams, making it more vulnerable to enemy fire. The M1A1 Abrams holds a distinct edge over the T-72 family of tanks in various aspects, making it a more formidable opponent on the battlefield.
On the other hand, the Abrams tank is a more advanced and modern tank that is highly mobile, well-protected, and equipped with advanced sensors and computer systems. It has superior firepower, mobility, and crew comfort compared to the T-72 but is also more expensive and complex to operate and maintain.
Is the T-90 better than the T-80?
Production of the T-80 at Omsk persisted until 2001, mainly for the export market. The principal upgrade in the T-90 is the incorporation of a slightly modified form of the T-80U's more sophisticated 1A45T Irtysh fire control system and an upgraded V-84MS multi-fuel engine developing 840 hp (618 kW).
Russia's armed forces now have around 1.3 million troops, with a goal to expand this to 1.5 million by 2026. The active portion of Russia's Ground Forces is believed to comprise around 550,000 troops, according to the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
According to Dutch open-source intelligence outlet, Oryx, Russia has lost 35 T-90A, 1 T-90AK and 7 T-90S tanks since February 2022. Per this count, Russia has also lost a further 25 T-90M tanks, which Russia has touted as a "breakthrough" vehicle.
Russia could find itself with no money as soon as next year and needs foreign investment, outspoken Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska has said.
The US has provided Ukraine with at least 100 Bradley armored personnel carriers. Open source data indicates that 34 of them have now been abandoned, damaged, or destroyed. Most losses appear to have occurred in the early days of Ukraine's counteroffensive.

And that's why they lost so many elite troops. "There is a paradox—Russia was unprepared for the war in terms of military, technical terms, in terms of training of people and so on. But at the same time, the Russian Federation could not be prepared better than it was at the beginning of 2022."
Since Russia invaded Ukraine last year, Ukraine's air force has lost 60 fighter jets, 40% of its pre-war fleet, according to a recently leaked American document. It has just 80 or so left.
Current Active Inventory: 5,209 Aircraft. The following represents an overview of the modern aerial fighting capabilities of the United States Air Force (2023). The service currently counts 5,209 total units in its active aircraft inventory.
On the evening of 21 May, Ukraine's air defence forces shot down a Russian Su-35 fighter jet. Subsequently, Pletenchuk removed the message about the downing of the Russian Su-35 fighter by air defence forces from the social network. Quote: "The spectacle of the 'peerless' Su-35 being downed was incredible.
What is the T-80 weakness?
It is weak against Gunships, out of range Artillery, and armed UAVs. Since the T-80 is deployed along side the KMDB Dozors, they will be well protected against any enemy Gunship that tries to attack them.
Now It's The Latest Obsolete Vehicle To Join The Russian War Effort. I write about ships, planes, tanks, drones, missiles and satellites. A T-80B in its heyday.
The break down of cost of the cost to purchase each tank version is: T-64 Tank — $1,100,000. T-72 Tank — $1,200,000. T-80 Tank — $3,000,000.
So even though the T-90A can penetrate the Abrams, in a hypothetical duel the Abrams has a much higher chance of taking the hit from the T-90 than the T-90 does from the Abrams.
The T-90M, also known as the Proryv-3, has been hailed by Russian media as the "most advanced armored vehicle" of Russia's T-90 main battle tank variants, and an upgrade from the T-72.
The T-90 main battle tanks (MBTs) are the most advanced Russian tanks currently in the thick of combat against Ukraine. The T-90s are often compared with advanced Western tanks like the M1 Abrams, Challenger-2, and Leopard-2 MBTs.
T-90M Proryv-3 ('Breakthrough-3') – pre-war deliveries. The stalled T-14 Armata tank programme aside, T-90M Proryv-3 is the most expensive Russian tank costing 118 million roubles at pre-war exchange rates (approximately $1.6 million). Deliveries only started in 2020, following contract signing in August 2017.
“In my opinion, this (T-90M tank) is now the best tank in the world… It is certainly better than Leopard, Challenger, Abrams (tanks), including in terms of its tactical and technical data, even in terms of such a component as mass,” Medvedev said, Sputnik reported.
The 69-ton, four-person Leopard 2A6 with its 1,500-horsepower diesel engine and tungsten armor is the most sophisticated tank in Ukrainian service. It's highly mobile and well-protected against enemy tank fire, but its greatest strength is its long-barrel 120-millimeter gun, precise optics and accurate fire-controls.
The brigades each had a single company with 10 tanks. Ukraine's total T-80 inventory in February 2022 was just 88 tanks, according to a count by one open-source analyst. In a year of hard fighting, the Ukrainian brigades have lost at least 42 T-80BVs that analysts can confirm: nearly half the inventory.
How many T-72 tanks were produced?
About 25,000 T-72 tanks have been built, and refurbishment has enabled many to remain in service for decades. It has been widely exported and has seen service in 40 countries and in numerous conflicts.
In January, British military intelligence reported Russian forces in Ukraine were reluctant to accept the first tranche of the tanks because of their “poor condition”. It also said any deployment of the T-14 would likely be “a high-risk decision” for Russia and one taken primarily for propaganda purposes.
The first T-54 prototype was completed at Nizhny Tagil by the end of 1945. From the late 1950s, the T-54 eventually became the main tank for armoured units of the Soviet Army, armies of the Warsaw Pact countries, and many others.
The T-72s have been operated by both Ukraine and Russia throughout the war, and are the world's most widely used main battle tanks. However, all of the promised Western-made main battle tanks are a significant upgrade to Kyiv's Soviet-era capabilities.
While the T-64 was the superior tank, it was more expensive and physically complex, and was produced in smaller numbers. The T-72 is mechanically simpler and easier to service in the field, while it is not as well protected, and its manufacturing process is correspondingly simpler.
The T-62 is less complex to operate and requires less maintenance than the T-72, making it an optimal choice to introduce for militia units, and potentially in future for conscript units in the Russian Army itself.
Heavy Guns are 152/155 mm howitzers. According to Oryx, which records only losses it can confirm, 2,082 Russian tanks have been destroyed, damaged, abandoned or captured since the start of the war in 2022.

The T-80 is a third-generation main battle tank that the Soviet Union developed in the late 1970s to replace the earlier T-64 and T-72 tanks. It is still in service with several countries today, including Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan.
Have any Russian Terminator tanks been destroyed?
The Russian army lost its first BMPT, out of 10 Uralvagonzavod built for the service, in a precision artillery strike in eastern Ukraine in February. It may have lost a second over the weekend after several speedy, grenade-clutching FPV drones struck the Terminator in Donetsk.
Ukraine says it destroyed a prized Russian "Terminator" armored vehicle with attack drones. A video shows the weapon being struck and pulled away by a T-80 tank that is also hit. This appears to be the second confirmed loss of the hi-tech vehicle used to support tanks.
Russia. Numbering 12,556 tanks, the Russian Federation has the largest fleet in their arsenal by far, from the workhorse T-72 series to the ultra-advanced T-14 Armata. This is more than the combined total of the number two and three spots, North Korea (6,645) and the U.S. (5,500).
Russia's T-14 is considered the most advanced tank in the world. Composite by Coffee or Die Magazine. Russia has the largest stockpile of tanks in the world, and 1,200 of them are staged near the Ukrainian border. The most formidable Russian tank may be the T-14 Armata, but how does it match up against American armor?
- Leopard 2A7A1, Germany. ...
- K2 Black Panther, South Korea. ...
- Challenger 2, United Kingdom. ...
- Armata, Russia. ...
- Merkava Mk. ...
- Type 90, Japan. ...
- Leclerc, France. ...
- Oplot-M, Ukraine.
There isn't much mystery which of these systems is superior in terms of lethality and survivability. It's the M1A2 Abrams, named for Vietnam-era General Creighton Abrams.
