How long are PIP reviews taking?
For a new claim you would expect 8-15 months but not a simple straightforward review. The usual turn around is 4-8weeks!.
DWP will review your form. If they need more information, an independent health professional might phone you to ask some questions or send a letter inviting you to an assessment. Assessments can be in person, over the phone or by video call. You'll get a letter that tells you what will happen with your PIP.
You might have to wait 2 to 10 weeks before you hear back from them.
The DWP usually review your PIP award about a year before it's due to end - but they can choose to review the award at any time. The DWP will write to you and ask you to fill in a PIP review form, which is a bit like a shorter version of the PIP claim form.
50% of all claims that got as far as an assessment received an award. Of claimants who got an award: 78% of claims awarded were short term (0 to 2 years) 11% were longer term (over 2 years)
“We are seeing an improvement in average clearance times for new PIP claims and the latest statistics show that the end-to-end journey has steadily reduced from 26 weeks in August 2021 to 18 weeks at the end of July 2022.”
Your Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will start being paid after you receive your decision letter. Your decision letter tells you whether you qualify for PIP and how much you will get. Your PIP will be backdated to when you first made a PIP claim, so you are likely to get a lump sum back payment.
When the DWP have decided to review your PIP claim, they will notify you by a letter which asks you to complete the form titled “Award review – how your disability affects you”. You are required to fill in the form. You need to send the form back with any supporting evidence you have not previously shared with the DWP.
Award reviewed
When the DWP reviews your claim, you will be sent a letter with a PIP review form. The letter will ask you to complete and return the PIP review form before the date on the letter. If you don't send the form back in time, the DWP will stop your claim unless you have a good reason for sending it in late.
Check what the mobility scores mean
If you get between 8 and 11 points in total, you'll get the mobility component of PIP at the standard rate. If you get at least 12 points in total, you'll get the mobility component at the enhanced rate.
Will DWP text when they've reached a decision on PIP renewal?
Recipients of PIP should be sent either letters or text messages from October 31, 2022. If readers don't get either form of communication they can call 0800 1214 433 and a letter will be sent confirming their extension.
The whole process from making a new claim for PIP, from the initial phonecall to the DWP through to receiving the Award Letter can take up to 24 weeks, which is around six months.

The main cause of the chaos appears to be an increase in the number of fresh claims for PIP and a decision by the DWP to prioritise these over existing claims, but without any effort to explain what is happening and give claimants a written extension to their award.
If you claim PIP after State Pension age, the DWP will usually give you an 'indefinite award'. This means there's no end date. They will usually review the award every 10 years. If you're already getting PIP when you reach State Pension age, the DWP will turn it into an indefinite award.
Social Security Scotland will start moving everyone else's PIP to Adult Disability Payment from August 2022. It will take until summer 2024 to finish the move. Until your PIP has moved to Adult Disability Payment, you'll need to carry on: answering any requests from DWP like filling in a PIP review or renewal form.
Over the last five years (November 2017 to October 2022): 39% of normal rules new claims, 69% of normal rules DLA reassessment claims, and 99% of SREL claims receiving an award (excluding withdrawn claims) 68% of planned award reviews resulted in an increase or no change to the level of award received by the claimant.
According to the DWP's own statistics, 59% of appeals are won by the claimant because the tribunal reached a different conclusion based on the same facts, with new written evidence making a difference in just 1% of cases.
99% of SRTI claimants are awarded PIP.
You can get a proof of benefit letter online if you are currently getting: Employment and Support Allowance. Income Support.
PIP is not awarded on your physical or mental health condition. It's based on the level of help you need because of your condition. You're assessed for PIP on the level of help you need to complete specific activities, which are categorised as two components – daily living component and mobility component.
What if nothing has changed for my PIP review?
If nothing's changed
The DWP might need more information to help them make a decision about your PIP award. They might ask for a face-to-face assessment or for more information from your GP or healthcare professional. If you describe how nothing's changed your PIP should continue as usual until DWP makes a decision.
'Overwhelming psychological distress' means distress related to an enduring mental health condition or intellectual or cognitive impairment which results in a severe anxiety state in which the symptoms are so severe that the person is unable to function.
The assessor will also make a note of your mental state during the assessment - for example, they'll record whether you look depressed or happy, tense or relaxed and how you cope with social interaction.
A consultation will be required for the majority of people having a Personal Independence Payment (PIP) assessment. PIP is a 'personal' payment and recognises that everyone is different.
You might be able to get Personal Independence Payment (PIP) if you need extra help because of an illness, disability or mental health condition. You can make a PIP claim whether or not you get help from anyone.
Advice: The DWP will usually contact your GP or healthcare professional to obtain medical evidence when you submit a PIP or ESA claim, the information is then sent to the DWP as part of your claim process.
If you score between eight and 11 points for your daily living needs in the PIP test, you get the standard rate of the daily living component. You get the enhanced rate of daily living component if you score 12 points or more.
- Don't let the assessor rush you and try not to just answer 'yes' or 'no' to their questions.
- Always try to explain how doing something would make you feel afterwards and the impact it can have on you if you had to do it repeatedly in a short period of time.
If you're terminally ill
you will not need an assessment. you will be entitled to an award of the enhanced rate of the daily living part of PIP without having to satisfy the normal qualifying period.
It can take up to 6 months from when you first contact the DWP to when you get your first payment. If the DWP decide you can get PIP, they'll pay you the money you should have got from the date you started your claim.
How long does PIP decision take after phone assessment 2022?
On average, it takes the DWP 20 weeks from the date you started your claim to make a decision.
After your assessment
The health professional will write a report and send it to the Department for Work and Pensions. We will read the report and any other information we have to help us make a decision. We will then send you a letter.
Claiming Personal Independence Payment can take up to four months after making your claim to you receive any money. PIP cannot be backdated but your payments start from the date you made your claim to cover the handling time at the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP).

Decision Makers usually follow the recommendation of the assessor, however, if you have marked yourself lower on your claim form then this might be a reason for only a Standard award, you will have to wait and see what the Decision is.
The assessor will also make a note of your mental state during the assessment - for example, they'll record whether you look depressed or happy, tense or relaxed and how you cope with social interaction.

Four points
You have an anxiety or panic attack. You have a breakdown or meltdown.
PIP resources
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) must consider all medical evidence when deciding about your PIP claim. However, unless you provide this information, they may not contact your GP or other health care professionals for more details.
After you have had your assessment, the healthcare professional will complete their report. They will then send it to a DWP case manager who will decide whether or not to award you PIP and, if it is awarded, at what rate and for how long. The average time for a PIP decision is 12 weeks from the date of the claim.
How do you make sure you get awarded PIP?
You are awarded points for each activity, depending on your ability and how much help you need to do it. The points you score for each activity in a section are added together. If you score between eight and 11 points for your daily living needs in the PIP test, you get the standard rate of the daily living component.
